Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin has many uses in reproductive biology and is central to infertility treatments, laboratory animal science and most importantly breeding management of livestock. It is isolated from the blood of pregnant horses in so-called "blood farms" in South America, where the horses are kept under unethical conditions. To protect these animals and to overcome current shortage in the PMSG supply, novel solutions are needed.
