Funding for new initiatives

The UZH Innovation Hub launches the new DRIVE program to support innovation initiatives that «Drive Research-based InnoVation Ecosystems» at UZH. The goal of the DRIVE program is to establish powerful cross-disciplinary communities and networks of researchers, inventors and entrepreneurs with strong links to industry, and a keen interest in commercialization and technology transfer.

DRIVE helps to build an impactful innovation ecosystem across the university that leverages both the diversity of disciplines and creative minds to drive forward research-based innovations for society.

DRIVE | action supports researchers, early career researchers and staff to kick-off innovation initiatives that

  • actively strengthen the innovation and entrepreneurship know-how among researchers, students, and staff
  • promote an entrepreneurial mindset
  • create opportunities for peer-learning, matchmaking and mentoring

DRIVE | transfer supports researchers, early career researchers and staff to launch innovation initiatives aiming at strategic activities generating lasting value through  

  • building active interdisciplinary communities and networks

  • fostering collaboration between academia and industry, public sector, foundations, startups and players from the innovation ecosystem

  • transfering research into novel solutions or improvements in products and processes. 

DRIVE | action: Details

Funding Funding of 5’000 to 20’000 CHF for up to one year
Application Apply any time. Proposals will be evaluated on a rolling basis and feedback is provided within six weeks after submission. 
Supported

Initiatives may include, but are not limited to, activities that:

  • Grow skills, build know-how

  • Facilitate formats regarding ideation, co-creation and open innovation with/without external actors

  • Create communities for peer-learning, ideation, sharing best-practice and contacts

  • Develop mentoring and coaching programs in the context of innovation and entrepreneurship

DRIVE | transfer: Details

Funding

Annual funding of up to 40’000 CHF for up to two years. Successful initiatives may apply for a one-year extension. 
Application Apply until November 30th 2024. Decisions will be communicated at the end of January 2025. Initiatives must start no later than June 2025. 
Supported

Initiatives may include, but are not limited to, activities that:

  • Build sustainable structures (e.g. innovation clusters) based on research with high implementation potential and an impact in the region and beyond.

  • Establish an active community for the exchange of best practices and initiation of collaborations with partners from industry along the entire value chain: from ideation and proof-of-concept (POC) to validation and commercialization, both through public-private partnerships or entrepreneurship.

Eligible applicants and partners

Researchers, early career researchers, and employees whose employment at UZH extends over the duration of the initiative are eligible to apply for this call. The proposal may include collaboration with external partner institutions. In this case, the contribution of the partner organization (financial and/or in-kind) is declared in the application. 

Selection criteria

The proposal resonates with the Innovation Hub‘s mission. The new initiative contributes to one or more of the four pillars «inspire, build, empower, nurture»see Annual report.  

  • The initiative fits within the existing UZH ecosystem; other relevant initiatives and activities are mentioned and potential synergies are outlined

  • The initiative addresses an interdisciplinary target group at UZH and/or practice partners

  • The initiative will draw attention from industry, politics and/or the startup ecosystem

  • The proposal convincingly describes how the initiative will create impact

For DRIVE | transfer the following additional criteria need to be fulfilled:  

  • The proposal clearly outlines the sustainable, structural added value that the initiative is intended to achieve.

  • The intended structure relies on excellent research, implies a high potential for translation, is future oriented and relevant to society and/or industry. 

Information on funding and budget

  • The funding can be used to cover personnel and material costs, as well as subcontracting.

  • The funding is transferred yearly and can only be spent in the designated year. 

  • No funding will be given for coordination only.

  • The funding does not come with FTEs (full-time equivalents). 

  • It is expected that the applicant co-finances the initiative with own funds from institutes, sponsors, partner institutions etc.; to be specified in the application.

Applicants can reach out to the Innovation Hub Office for advice on their proposals before submission. Initiatives supported will be promoted for visibility on the Hub website and its communication channels (applicants are asked to provide respective material).
